Rooms close to campus for international scholars

People from all over the world are welcome!

I am delighted to offer two furnished bedrooms with a shared bath for rent near the Virginia Tech campus, preferably for international scholars and visitors. 我会说一点儿中文。I am a Virginia Tech alumna and my...
father was a Virginia Tech professor. I am a mental health counselor and engage in work and scholarship from my home office.

These rentals are ideal for international:
- Visiting scholars
- Post-docs
- Ph.D. students
- People who would like to practice engaging in English in an academically-oriented environment.

We live in a quaint, 1944 house in a quiet neighborhood 1.2 miles from Lane Stadium, 1.8 miles from Burruss Hall, and a 2-minute walk from a Blacksburg Transit bus stop. Renters share use of the main floor bathroom with a tub and shower. We all share use of a kitchen, sun room, living room, dining room, screened porch, and gardens. Our home is within walking and biking distance of grocery stores (Kroger, Oasis, Annie Kay's), a pharmacy, restaurants, and a movie theater.

I offer two bedrooms for rent. Although the rent is month-to-month, a minimum of a 6-month commitment is expected. When both bedrooms are rented, three adults live in the home.

The north bedroom will be available January 1, 2025.

The south bedroom is rented.

The north bedroom, 11’ 5” x 11’ 2”, is furnished with a queen bed, two small side tables, dresser, desk, small desk lamp, office chair, rug, and towel rack. It has two small closets.

The south bedroom, 11’ 6” x 11’ 3”, is furnished with a single bed, side table, shelf unit, dresser, desk, office chair, floor lamp, rug, and towel rack. It has one small closet. It contains the homeowner’s large bookcase and books.

Included

- 1 bedroom, furnished
- shared use of adjacent bathroom
- internet wifi via high-speed cable connection
- utilities: high efficiency gas heating and air conditioning, gas-heated hot water, electricity, water, sewer, trash
- linens: towels, sheets, blankets, down comforter, bedspread, pillow
- use of clothes washer and dryer, including laundry detergent
- twice-per-month cleaning service (bathroom and vacuuming only, subject to cleaning service’s requirements)
- use of the kitchen’s dishes, flatware, pots, pans, small and large appliances, including rice cooker and air fryer
- portions of kitchen cabinets, refrigerator shelves, and freezer for personal foods

Not included
- private bath or shower
- cable television
- storage - storage for items beyond capacity of room requires separate rented storage facility

The ideal renter:
- Enjoys living with cats.
- Is an early riser rather than a night owl. (If you routinely stay up past 10:00 PM, this rental is not a good fit.)
- Holds scholarship as a value and priority.
- Values shared living and contributes consciously to the well-being and quality of life for all.
- Communicates openly so we can co-create optimal living in a shared space.
- Rather than cooking, prefers eating at the university's dining halls or local restaurants, getting takeout, or preparing simple meals.

Required

- Observance of quiet hours, 8:30 PM - 6:00 AM and 9:30 - 11:00 AM.
- Non-smoker, non-vaper
- Like cats/not allergic to cats. Two indoor-outdoor cats roam the house freely.
- Security deposit of $350 and first month’s rent of $650 due before move-in
- Reference from adviser, supervisor, sponsor, or mutually known individual
- Signed housemates' agreement prior to move-in (available for viewing upon request)

Previous and current renters are open to being contacted about living at 509 Fairview Avenue. I have rented rooms to international scholars since January, 2020. Renters have included scholars from Brazil, China, Pakistan, India, Japan, and Greece.

Please contact me with any questions at all or if you would like to view the room and house.
